Re: Skullcap
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 11:16 PMI think i started mine from seed. It grows by runners, like a mint. I quickly got a large patch of it from one plant. It is not too hard to control if you keep it pulled up and pruned at the roots around the edges of your little patch. It's a lovely plant with lovely gentleness and strength medicinally speaking.

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:07 AMIt needs light in order to germinate...lightly spread on the top of the soil...and keep covered with a plastic layer until it sprouts...
happy planting,

Re: Skullcap
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 4:26 PMHi Star Catcher,
I grow this plant.....it is very easy to grow...you can plant it from seeds or buy a plant from Horizon Herbs or Crimson Sage Nursery. Both places you can order online.....this plant blooms in late summer.....and that is when you gather it for tincture....why a wonderful, healing plant.
This is one of the plants that saved me in my last year of teaching school....this one in combination with St. Joan's Wort.....peace, Julie -

Re: Skullcap
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 8:10 AMI have a quick question. Given that I studied plants that are used to kill people a while back, I was wondering if you guys know the LD of skullcap, and if you know how much an individual can safely consume/absorb given body weight and age. Skullcap can stop your heart if used improperly. As I always say with herbs, grow your own and watch out for contamination!
Also, I read that you are to harvest the leaves in June and that the plant must be 3-4 years old. -

Re: Skullcap
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 1:47 PMsince most herbs haven't undergone clinical trials with lab animals, etc, the LD is probably based on anecdotal cases. I'd just use some simple search terms like "scullcap overdose" and check on toxnet.
