Some like their feet cool and others crave the heat--cucumbers for example. I'd ask about the seeds in the place you got them, and find out which varieties you have and what they prefer.

squashes/melons/cukes really don't like their roots disturbed once they sprout, so it's best to set out young seedlings by cutting out the bottoms of pots and gently sliding them out to plant. all love to climb up things, and that's a nice way to keep the developing fruits unmarred and off of the ground. make sure they are planted in hot sunny areas too...berkeley horticultural nursery used to always have out of control gourds climbing up all over the roof of one of their greenhouses.

thanks Chili. Im growing Goblin Eggs, Big Max, Sugar pie, birdhouse gourds and loofah. Of those, maybe the goblin eggs and loofah might be climbers, the others will be too heavy. I plan on sliding a paper plate under the fruits so they dont get ugly on the bottom.

I saw some guy in Hilo Hawaii growing small pumpkin sized squashes on his chain link fence. It was really odd seeing something that big hanging over the ground. but it seemed to be working.
