Greetings. I'd like to pose a question for those of you in this tribe.
I'm 33 and have always grown up with a garden in the backyard... always had a "green thumb" as it were. In high school i opted out of the last two years of a catholic education and joined a career center where i took up horticulture and landscape construction. Since the time i graduated i've been working with the same partner and we've done pretty well for ourselves ,yep just the two of us doing over 300k a year (in contracts) here in Ohio. My question to you is this....
...Do you think there's a market for "Contract Gardening"?
By this i mean homeowners would contract to have a garden created.. tilled, fertilized(organic), planted, and cared for (weeded, natural pest control, etc.) on their land. I know a lot of you may do the "dirty work" yourselves .. but my idea will be geared more to the elderly ,urban families ,or green minded individuals. Of course, my theories and ideas have an Ohio base... but i'd like to hear from anyone.. any area or zone.
Please feel free to input any information you're willing to share.
Than you
(i apologize to those of you that have seen this post on various other tribes... just trying to contact the right people for the best results, thank you)

Re: Contract Gardening
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 11:09 AMYes, YES f@#*ing right there is
I've been planning to start doing this same thing.. many people want gardens but don't have the time to create and nurture them.. which is why they have sprawling lawns.. I've got to study here, but DO it, people will call if you give them an attractive ad and a number!!
Also, obviously add some pics to your ad of previous work, evidence of responsibility, etc.

Re: Contract Gardening
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 5:24 PMYou know the market back there better than I do, but I'd think there's at least some demand for it. I know of people in Seattle that are making a go of it doing nothing but veggie gardens. I put in raised beds here and there, but I don't plant or anything like that.

Re: Contract Gardening
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 7:07 AMYes there is - there's also a great article in the October 2008 issue of Sunset about a guy in urban San Fransisco who not only plants and maintains backyard gardens, but collects and distributes the excess out of them for his other clients - a little self-contained CSA service! I thought that was just cute as hell. I live in a small community where there really wouldn't be a market for such a thing, but last year I put out a classified ad for gardening and ended up with a good group of clients who were all wealthy with a yard full of expensive plants- what I found with them is that they did not consider their plants "gardened" unless they were drastically pruned. A little rooting hormone and potting mix, and I've got tons of free nursery stock! A very sweet deal.

Re: Contract Gardening
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 5:48 PMIt's called MyFarm myfarmsf.com/about.html (the SF based CSA thing)
I've been mulling about starting these all over the place. Not that I particularly have the know-how...but I definitely have the enthusiasm to encourage people to start them and keep them going!!
